Going through the book gives you an insight into the knowledge and experience acquired by the author in his long journey of professional life in the oil industry. It also exhibits his extraordinary skill of presenting it in the simplest method for everyone to understand. Basics are very important in every aspect of our work and it helps us build a strong foundation towards a successful career. It is definitely a good read for beginners, but while going through the book as an experienced professional, I realized that it takes us back to the basics that we usually tend to forget when we move ahead in our careers. Therefore, I strongly recommend the book for beginners as well as experienced professionals of the oil industry.

Petroleum products form an integral part of modern day living. Still very few people, even the learned, are aware of the complexity of petroleum technology. Even an oil expert may not be conversant with many of the terms used in oil field. This book, written lucidly, bridges that gap. Natraj has done an immense service to the layman, a novice in oil exploration as also the expert by introducing the nuances of petroleum technology through this book.

The book ‘Introduction to Oil Well Drilling’ has been well written by Natraj. All his academic, technical skills have been fully utilized to complete the text of this book, in a lucid manner. He has dealt with almost all the topics, right from composition of the oil molecule to completion of the well, which envelopes ‘womb to tomb’ story of the oil drilling.

The topics have been discussed at length, but no where do they appear lengthy. For e.g., the topics like interior of the earth, plate tectonics, basic rock types and their relation in time and space with the reservoir rocks, has been perfectly linked without any loopholes in description.

While introducing the basics of drilling techniques, the author does not ignore the necessary information about ‘who owns the well?’, etc. Likewise, all the other topics have been illustrated with the help of self-explanatory sketches, pictures or line drawings that support the adjacent text. His description of ‘drill bit’ also encompasses ‘Rock bit classification chart’ and ‘bit cost calculations’.

Mr. Natraj has so comprehensibly matched the related operations on the drilling rigs that either a drilling person or drilling manager, will have to refer to this book again and again, during their duty hours. So would be the reaction of a lay man. He, after going through the book, would definitely react that ‘he has completely understood the theoretical aspects and has also gained the practical know-how’.

I feel, this book needs to be introduced as a ‘learner’s first guide’ for those trainees who join oil industry. It also is a ‘master guide’ for a mud logger, sample catcher, rig owner or a oil field manager.
The Index of the book is quite exhaustive, covers mostly all the terminology related to oil drilling industry, as well as, petroleum geology.

In a nutshell, it is a ‘must have’ book for a fresher on the drilling rig, for the drill man when on his duty and also for the reservoir manager.
